Summary

Sudden anger attacks are common in depressed patients, affecting nearly half of those studied. These patients experienced more severe depression, anxiety, and anger than those without attacks.

Background:

  • Anger attacks are sudden episodes of intense anger with autonomic symptoms.
  • They are often perceived as uncharacteristic and situationally inappropriate by individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of anger attacks in a non-Western population with major depression.
  • To investigate if depression in patients with anger attacks differs qualitatively from depression without these episodes.

Main Methods:

  • 88 medication-free outpatients diagnosed with major depression (DSM-IV) were assessed.
  • The Anger Attacks Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Spielberger's State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory were used.
