Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Virology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) is a rare but severe condition.
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection can cause FHF, even in immunocompetent individuals.
  • Diagnosis is challenging due to the lack of typical mucocutaneous lesions.

Observation:

  • The case involved an immunocompetent woman who succumbed to FHF.
  • Herpes simplex virus type 2 hepatitis was suspected but not definitively diagnosed before death.
  • Key clinical indicators included elevated transaminases, leukopenia, and low bilirubin.

Findings:

  • Herpes simplex virus hepatitis is a rare but treatable cause of FHF.
  • Prompt diagnosis is essential for effective therapeutic intervention.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Liver biopsy, particularly transjugular liver biopsy, is vital for establishing the etiology of FHF.
  • Implications:

    • Transjugular liver biopsy offers a safe and effective method for diagnosing FHF causes.
    • This procedure can significantly influence the management of FHF.
    • Establishing transjugular liver biopsy as a standard diagnostic tool is recommended in specialized centers.
