Purpose of the Study:

  • To delineate the current practice patterns of licensed massage therapists (LMTs) in the Greater Boston Area.
  • To identify key characteristics of LMTs, including demographics, training, practice settings, patient load, session duration, fees, and insurance coverage.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was administered to 126 randomly selected massage practices.
  • Data collected included practitioner demographics, educational background (mean 1000 hours of training), practice type (59% group practices), patient volume (mean 20 patients/week), session length (50-60 minutes), and fees ($60 average).

  • The majority of respondents were Caucasian (95%) and female (80%), with a mean age of 41.
