Summary

Open renal cryoablation is a safe method for destroying small kidney tumors. However, careful freezing is needed to prevent recurrence, requiring long-term monitoring for effective cancer treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Cryoablation uses freezing temperatures to destroy abnormal tissue.
  • Previous studies show efficacy in liver, uterine, and prostate cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate the safety and effectiveness of open renal cryoablation for small solid renal masses.
  • Assess treatment outcomes and radiographic response.

Main Methods:

  • 29 patients with small renal masses underwent open renal cryoablation.
  • Patients were followed to assess safety and radiographic response.

Main Results:

  • Median lesion size was 2.2 cm (22 solid, 7 complex masses).
  • 5 serious adverse events occurred; 1 was procedure-related.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 91.3% of patients showed complete radiographic response at 16-month median follow-up.
  • One patient had biopsy-proven local recurrence.
  • Conclusions:

    • Open renal cryoablation is a safe technique for renal mass destruction.
    • Inadequate freezing can lead to local disease persistence.
    • Prolonged follow-up is necessary due to slow tumor growth rates.
