    Summary

Generalized Yersinia enterocolitica infection presents two distinct syndromes. Acute septicemic cases responded to antibiotics, while subacute infections with abscesses had high mortality despite treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Microbiology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Yersinia enterocolitica is a bacterial pathogen.
    • Generalized infections can manifest in various clinical forms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the clinical spectrum of generalized Yersinia enterocolitica infections.
    • To differentiate between septicemic and localized forms of the disease.
    • To evaluate treatment outcomes based on clinical presentation.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 13 patients with generalized Yersinia enterocolitica infection.
    • Clinical data collection and review.
    • Comparison of outcomes between different clinical syndromes.

    Main Results:

    • Two distinct clinical syndromes were identified: acute septicemic and subacute localizing infections.
    • Seven patients presented with acute septicemia, resembling systemic salmonellosis.
    • Six patients had subacute infections with hepatic or splenic abscesses, often mimicking amebic hepatitis.

    Conclusions:

    • Generalized Yersinia enterocolitica infection has a dichotomous clinical presentation.
    • Acute septicemic Yersinia enterocolitica infection is often treatable with antibiotics.
    • Subacute Yersinia enterocolitica infection with abscess formation carries a poor prognosis, even with antibiotic therapy.
