Insights
Left atrial thrombi are common in mitral stenosis patients. This case highlights echocardiographic and Doppler findings of a free-floating thrombus in a patient with mitral stenosis.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Left atrial thrombi are a known complication in patients diagnosed with mitral stenosis.
- Free-floating thrombi within the left atrium are occasionally observed in this patient population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the echocardiographic and Doppler findings associated with a left atrial thrombus in a patient presenting with mitral stenosis.
Main Methods:
- Utilized echocardiography (both 2D and Doppler) to visualize and characterize the left atrial thrombus.
- Assessed the morphology, mobility, and hemodynamic impact of the thrombus in relation to mitral stenosis.
Main Results:
- Echocardiography revealed a significant left atrial thrombus.
- Doppler findings demonstrated the thrombus's free-floating nature and its potential impact on blood flow dynamics within the left atrium.
Conclusions:
- Echocardiography and Doppler are crucial for diagnosing left atrial thrombi in mitral stenosis.
- The findings underscore the importance of imaging in managing these complex cardiac conditions.
Abstract:
Left atrial thrombi are not infrequent in patients with mitral stenosis. Occasionally, free-floating thrombi have been reported in these patients. We report on the echocardiographic and Doppler findings in a patient with mitral stenosis.
