Insights
Male children with moderate asthma have less fat-free mass. This study in children with asthma found differences in body composition, specifically lower fat-free mass in boys.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Pulmonology
- Biomedical Sciences
- Anthropometry
Context:
- Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease in children.
- Understanding body composition in children with moderate asthma is crucial for comprehensive care.
- Previous research has not fully elucidated anthropometric differences in this population.
Purpose:
- To evaluate anthropometric variables and body composition in children diagnosed with moderate asthma.
- To compare body composition between children with moderate asthma and healthy controls.
Summary:
- A cross-sectional study compared 84 children with moderate asthma (treated with inhaled budesonide) to 89 healthy children using bioelectrical impedance.
- Results indicated that males with moderate asthma exhibited lower fat-free mass and total body water compared to controls.
- However, these differences were not statistically significant when data were corrected for body weight.
Impact:
- Findings suggest potential alterations in body composition, specifically reduced fat-free mass, in male children with moderate asthma.
- Highlights the need for further investigation into the long-term effects of asthma and its treatment on pediatric body composition.
- Informs clinical practice regarding nutritional and physical activity considerations for children with moderate asthma.
Background:
To assess anthropometric variables and body composition in children with moderate asthma.
Subjects And Method:
Cross-sectional study of two homogeneous cohorts. Group 1 (study group): 84 children with moderate asthma treated with inhaled budesonide for al least 12 months; group 2 (control group): 89 healthy children. Body measurements were studied by bioelectrical impedance.
Results:
Males with moderate asthma showed lower values for fat-free mass and total body water. Data corrected for weight rendered no statistically significant differences.
Conclusions:
Male children with moderate asthma show a lower fast-free mass.

Antiasthma Drugs: β2-Adrenoceptor Agonists
One class of bronchodilators includes β2-adrenoceptor agonists. These agents target the β2-adrenoceptors located on bronchial smooth muscle cells. By stimulating these receptors, β2-agonists induce relaxation in these...

Antiasthma Drugs: Inhaled Corticosteroids and Glucocorticoids
ICS work through a multifaceted mechanism of action. They suppress the inflammatory response caused by the proliferation of TH cells. They also reduce the transcription of the IL-2 gene, which is involved in the...
Antiasthma Drugs: Mast Cell Stabilizers and Anti-IgE Drugs
Mast cell stabilizers, such as cromolyn (also known as sodium cromoglycate) and nedocromil (Tilade), are effective drugs in asthma management. These stabilizers hinder histamine release by skillfully obstructing the activation of mast cells and other cellular entities. Notably, they navigate this task without...
