Abstract:
HAART has improved survival and decreased the incidence of opportunistic infections in people with HIV. Strict adherence to HAART is crucial in order to maintain a low viral load and prevent the development of drug-resistant virus. However, complicated regimens, medication side effects, and demographic and psychosocial factors can make adherence to HAART difficult. This article reviews the issues surrounding adherence to HAART, including methods of measuring adherence, reasons for non-adherence, and ways to improve adherence.
