In September 2000, Texas had 2237 licensed PAs practicing in 186 counties.

Most PAs practicing in Texas graduate from in-state programs and remain in the state.

The supply of and demand for PAs in Texas appear to be in equilibrium.

Conclusions:

Physician assistants (PAs) have contributed to reducing healthcare access barriers in Texas, notably in rural communities.
The current equilibrium suggests the PA workforce is adequately meeting the state's health needs, with policy implications for future planning.
