The first auditory brainstem implant (ABI) in the Czech Republic was successfully implanted in a neurofibromatosis type 2 patient. This groundbreaking surgery restored auditory function for a deaf patient, aiding lip-reading.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) often leads to bilateral vestibular schwannomas, resulting in profound hearing loss.
  • Previous surgical interventions for NF2-related tumors can cause complete deafness.
  • Auditory brainstem implantation offers a potential solution for hearing restoration in such cases.

Observation:

  • The first auditory brainstem implant (ABI) in the Czech Republic was performed on a 40-year-old female NF2 patient.
  • The implantation involved placing a Nucleus CI21 + 1M system electrode on the ventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei.
  • Electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses (EABRs) confirmed accurate electrode placement.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced an uneventful post-operative recovery.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Following surgery and speech processor fitting, the patient utilizes the ABI as an aid to lip-reading.
  • No adverse or pathological side effects were observed during the post-operative period.
  • Implications:

    • This case marks a significant milestone in neuro-otological surgery in the Czech Republic.
    • Auditory brainstem implantation demonstrates efficacy in restoring a degree of auditory perception for deaf NF2 patients.
    • The successful implantation highlights the potential for international collaboration in advancing complex surgical procedures.
