Husbandry and nutrition of hedgehogs
1Canis Consulting, Alameda, California, USA.
Abstract:
Hedgehogs are becoming increasingly popular as pets. This article provides a broad overview of those factors with which practitioners must be familiar to provide guidance to hedgehog owners. The taxonomy, anatomy, and natural history of the common pet species are presented along with commonly observed behaviors. Information on the reproduction and neonatal management is described. Current recommendations for handling, housing, and feeding these animals are also discussed.

Optimal Foraging
How animals obtain and eat their food is called foraging behavior. Foraging can include searching for plants and hunting for prey and depends on the species and environment.
Predator-Prey Interactions
Predators consume prey for energy. Predators that acquire prey and prey that avoid predation both increase their chances of survival and reproduction (i.e., fitness). Routine predator-prey interactions elicit mutual adaptations that improve predator offenses, such as claws, teeth, and speed, as well as prey defenses, including crypsis, aposematism, and mimicry. Thus, predator-prey interactions resemble an evolutionary arms race.Although predation is commonly associated with carnivory, for...
