Background:

  • Small cecal tumors can be difficult to identify during initial laparotomy for appendicitis.
  • Delayed diagnosis of underlying malignancy leads to poorer patient prognosis.
  • This case highlights the challenge of diagnosing cecal neoplasms presenting as appendicitis.

Implications:

  • Consideration of cecal neoplasm in elderly patients with appendicitis is essential.
  • Enhanced preoperative and postoperative management is recommended for patients over 50 presenting with appendicitis.
  • Increased vigilance during laparotomy for appendicitis may improve detection rates of underlying malignancy.
