    Background:

    • Conditioned suppression is a behavioral phenomenon where an animal reduces responding for a reward when a warning signal predicts an aversive stimulus.
    • Intracranial stimulation (ICS) of the lateral hypothalamus is a potent reward, and its associated behaviors have been studied for resistance to suppression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of intracranial stimulation (ICS) intensity in conditioned suppression.
    • To determine if the intensity of brain stimulation affects the degree of behavioral suppression when paired with an aversive stimulus.

    Main Methods:

    • Two experiments were conducted using rats trained to lever press for lateral hypothalamic ICS on a fixed-ratio 1 schedule.
    • Experiment I paired a moderate foot shock with a warning stimulus to elicit conditioned suppression of lever pressing for low-intensity ICS.
