The small intestinal disaccharidase activity in ulcerative colitis.

E Gudmand-Höyer, V Binder, J Söltoft

    Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology
    |January 1, 1975
    PubMed
    Summary

Ulcerative colitis patients show reduced lactase activity during disease flares. Lactose malabsorption was not observed, indicating specific enzyme changes in active ulcerative colitis.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Digestive Physiology

    Background:

    • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
    • Small intestinal enzyme activity can be affected by inflammatory conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate small-intestinal disaccharidase activity in patients with ulcerative colitis.
    • To compare enzyme activity during acute exacerbations versus remission.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed disaccharidase activity in 12 UC patients.
    • Measurements were taken during active disease and after remission.

    Main Results:

    • Lactase activity was significantly lower during acute ulcerative colitis flares.
    • No instances of transient lactose malabsorption were detected.

    Conclusions:

    • Active ulcerative colitis is associated with decreased lactase activity.
    • Lactase deficiency during UC flares may not lead to malabsorption symptoms.
