Summary

Background:

The association between high-riding jugular bulb diverticulum and inner ear disorders remains unclear.
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is a complex condition with various potential etiologies.

Observation:

A retrospective review of 19 patients with SSHL identified three cases with a right-sided jugular bulb diverticulum.
Imaging modalities including CT scan and MRA were used to diagnose the jugular bulb diverticulum.

Findings:

One of the three SSHL patients with jugular bulb diverticulum developed delayed endolymphatic hydrops.
Potential mechanisms include pressure effects on inner ear structures (cochlear and vestibular aqueducts) and turbulent blood flow from the diverticulum.
