Area of Science:

  • Adolescent Health
  • Psychology
  • Eating Behaviors

Background:

  • Dieting is prevalent among adolescents, with significant gender disparities.
  • Understanding the predictors of dieting behavior is crucial for early intervention.
  • Previous research indicates psychological factors influence adolescent eating patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of dieting in Norwegian adolescents.
  • To identify psychological and physiological predictors of dieting behavior in adolescent girls and boys.
  • To explore the relationship between dieting, weight concerns, and eating disorder symptomatology.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 1117 Norwegian adolescents was surveyed.
  • Multiple regression analyses were employed to predict dieting behavior.
  • The Weight and Eating Concerns Inventory (WEC) was used to assess psychological factors.

Main Results:

  • 27.4% of girls and 9% of boys reported dieting.
  • Dieting in girls was predicted by psychological concerns (WEC) and perceived body size.
  • Dieting in boys was predicted by WEC, perceived body size, and Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Dieting girls with high WEC reported more constipation and binge eating.

Conclusions:

  • Psychological factors are key drivers of dieting in adolescent girls.
  • Body Mass Index is an additional predictor for dieting boys.
  • High WEC in dieting girls indicates a potential risk for developing eating disorders.
