Two rare vascular tumors in large vessels mimicked thrombosis and arterial occlusion. Surgical resection was successful for both epithelioid hemangioendothelioma and angiosarcoma, with no recurrence at 24 months.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Vascular tumors of large vessels are rare and can present with symptoms mimicking common vascular pathologies.
  • Intraluminal growth of these tumors poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

  • Case 1: Borderline malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the femoral vein with intraluminal growth.
  • Case 2: Malignant epithelioid angiosarcoma of the carotid artery with intraluminal growth.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemical studies were crucial for accurate tumor classification.
  • Both tumors were treated with surgical resection.
  • No recurrence or metastasis was observed at 24 months post-surgery.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical resection can be an effective treatment for these rare vascular tumors.
  • Continued follow-up is necessary due to uncertainties in the biological behavior of vascular tumors.
  • Further research is needed to optimize treatment strategies for vascular tumors with intraluminal growth.
