Area of Science:

  • Speech Synthesis
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Digital Signal Processing

Background:

  • Traditional speech synthesizers often rely on command or phoneme-based inputs.
  • Controlling synthesized speech parameters in real-time offers new expressive possibilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel, hand-controlled speech synthesizer.
  • To explore real-time speech parameter manipulation using a multi-parametric user interface.

Main Methods:

  • A Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) Creator system was developed at York.
  • Five strain gauge sensors provided pressure data to control speech parameters.
  • A freely available time domain formant synthesis system ran on a standard PC.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The system generated MIDI data based on sensor input.
  • Fundamental frequency, three formants, and amplitude of synthesized speech were controlled.
  • A novel hand-controlled speech synthesizer was created, functioning like a musical instrument.

Conclusions:

  • The developed system offers a new paradigm for speech synthesis, moving beyond command-based control.
  • Real-time, intuitive control over synthesized speech parameters is achievable.
  • This approach enables speech to be shaped dynamically, similar to musical performance.
