Myotonic dystrophy (MD) frequently causes cardiac issues. Electrophysiologic studies are most effective for early detection of heart problems in MD patients, revealing abnormalities in 87%.

Background:

  • Myotonic dystrophy (MD) is a multisystem disorder with frequent cardiac complications.
  • Fatal cardiac rhythm disturbances cause sudden death in 30% of MD patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess methods for early detection of myocardial and conduction system disturbances in MD.
  • To evaluate the sensitivity of various cardiological diagnostic tools.

Main Methods:

  • 45 MD patients underwent ECG, 24-hr Holter monitoring, echocardiography, and electrophysiologic studies.
  • Late ventricular potentials were analyzed in 36 patients.
  • Genetic testing confirmed CTG triplet expansion in all participants.
