A rare, large choroid plexus cyst diagnosed prenatally persisted after birth. While small cysts are benign, the long-term outlook for large, persistent cysts requires further investigation and monitoring.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroimaging
  • Fetal Medicine
  • Pediatric Neurology

Background:

  • Choroid plexus cysts (CPCs) are commonly diagnosed prenatally.
  • Most prenatal CPCs resolve spontaneously during gestation.
  • Large, persistent CPCs diagnosed in utero are exceedingly rare.

Observation:

  • A case of a persistent large choroid plexus cyst diagnosed at 32 weeks' gestation is presented.
  • Serial ultrasounds and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed a persistent cyst measuring 1.7 x 2.5 x 3.0 cm.
  • The infant demonstrated normal clinical and neurological development at 11 months of age.

Findings:

  • Prenatal diagnosis of a large choroid plexus cyst.
  • Postnatal persistence of the large choroid plexus cyst.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Normal neurodevelopmental outcome at 11 months in this specific case.
  • Implications:

    • The prognosis for large, persistent CPCs (> or = 1 cm) remains less clear than for smaller cysts.
    • Long-term neurological follow-up is essential for neonates with large, persistent CPCs.
    • This case highlights the importance of continued surveillance and reporting of rare fetal intracranial anomalies.
