Context:

Pseudothrombocytopenia (PTCP) is an in vitro phenomenon leading to spurious thrombocytopenia detected by automated analyzers.
It results from platelet clumping due to serum immunoglobulins binding to platelet surface antigens.

Purpose:

To determine the prevalence of PTCP in hospitalized patients.
To investigate the clinical significance and associated morbidities of PTCP.

Summary:

A study of 2922 inpatients identified 37 cases of PTCP (1.26%).
PTCP cases showed a significantly higher association with solid tumors (24.3%), myeloproliferative syndromes (18.9%), and autoimmune diseases (10.8%) compared to the general patient cohort.

Impact:

This research highlights PTCP as a frequent cause of thrombocytopenia, necessitating accurate identification to prevent diagnostic and therapeutic errors.
