Summary

Continuous light exposure in infant monkeys did not cause abnormal ocular growth. However, some variations in emmetropization suggest constant light may impact visual development differently than a light/dark cycle.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of continuous light on ocular growth and emmetropization in infant rhesus monkeys.
  • To compare primate responses to light-reared chickens.

  • Infant rhesus monkeys (n=9) were exposed to continuous light for 6 months.
  • Ocular parameters were measured using cycloplegic retinoscopy, keratometry, and A-scan ultrasonography.
