Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Surgery

Context:

  • Diabetic cystoid macular edema (CME) is a common complication of diabetes affecting vision.
  • Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove vitreous humor, often used for retinal conditions.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the visual outcomes following vitrectomy for diabetic cystoid macular edema.
  • To identify factors influencing final visual acuity after vitrectomy for diabetic CME.

Summary:

  • Vitrectomy resulted in improved visual acuity in 58% of patients with diabetic CME.
  • Final visual acuity of 0.5 or better was achieved in 38% of cases.
  • Preoperative visual acuity and cystoid space size on fluorescein angiography significantly correlated with final visual outcomes.

Impact:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Diabetic CME is a suitable indication for vitrectomy, irrespective of posterior vitreous membrane status.
  • Preoperative visual acuity of 0.1 or better and/or cystoid spaces <5 disc areas are favorable prognostic indicators for achieving better visual outcomes post-surgery.
