Isosulfan blue dye safely identifies liver porta hepatis lymph nodes in dogs, paving the way for colorectal cancer metastasis research in humans. This lymphatic mapping technique shows promise for improved patient prognosis and management.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Veterinary Medicine

Background:

  • Porta hepatis lymph node status impacts prognosis in colorectal cancer with liver metastases.
  • Lymphatic mapping using isosulfan blue dye is established for other cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of hepatic isosulfan blue dye injection for identifying porta hepatis lymph nodes in an animal model.

Main Methods:

  • Three dogs underwent laparotomy with hepatic isosulfan blue dye injection.
  • Continuous physiological monitoring and serial blood tests were performed.
  • Lymph node identification and animal survival were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Isosulfan blue dye successfully identified porta hepatis lymph nodes in all subjects.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No significant perioperative morbidity or mortality was observed.
  • Physiological parameters and liver function tests remained stable, with transient alkaline phosphatase increase.
  • Conclusions:

    • Hepatic isosulfan blue dye injection is a safe and effective method for identifying porta hepatis lymph nodes in this canine model.
    • This technique provides a foundation for future studies in human patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases.
