Background:

  • Acute hydrogen sulfide toxicity is well-documented.
  • Limited research exists on adverse health effects from chronic, low-level hydrogen sulfide exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare adverse health effects in communities with chronic low-level hydrogen sulfide exposure to reference communities.
  • To investigate the association between industrial hydrogen sulfide sources and resident health symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Community-based health survey using a custom computer questionnaire.
  • Comparison of symptom reporting between two exposed communities and three reference communities.
  • Statistical analysis using iterated odds ratios to assess symptom category prevalence.

Main Results:

  • Nine out of 12 symptom categories showed significantly higher prevalence in exposed communities (odds ratio > 3.0).
  • Central nervous system symptoms (OR=12.7) and respiratory symptoms (OR=11.92) were most strongly associated with exposure.
  • Blood-related symptoms also showed significant elevation (OR=8.07).

Conclusions:

  • Chronic, low-level hydrogen sulfide exposure is associated with a range of adverse health effects.
  • The central nervous system, respiratory system, and blood are particularly vulnerable.
  • Further investigation into the long-term health consequences of hydrogen sulfide exposure is warranted.
