Summary

Patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) show lower brain surface temperatures during surgery. This reduction in brain temperature correlates with SAH severity and may indicate depressed cerebral blood flow and metabolism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate intraoperative brain surface temperature in patients with SAH.
  • To compare brain temperature in SAH patients with a control group undergoing elective surgery for unruptured aneurysms.

Main Methods:

  • Monitored brain surface temperature and jugular bulb oxygen saturation (SjO2) in SAH patients (n=16) within 48 hours of onset.
  • Measured the same parameters in control patients with unruptured aneurysms (n=15).

  • SAH patients exhibited significantly lower brain surface temperatures (35.3°C) compared to controls (36.1°C).
  • Reduced brain temperature correlated with the severity of aneurysmal grade (r=0.837, P<0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Brain temperature and/or temperature gradients may be altered early after SAH.
  • Lower brain surface temperature in SAH is likely due to decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF) and metabolism.
  • Findings highlight the potential role of temperature regulation in SAH management.
