Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Toxicology
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Doxylamine is an ethanolamine-class antihistamine widely used as an over-the-counter sleep-inducing agent in Germany.
  • Limited literature exists on lethal doxylamine intoxications, though combined intoxications are more frequently reported.

Observation:

  • This report details two cases of doxylamine poisoning.
  • Both cases involved significantly elevated doxylamine concentrations detected in blood and organ tissues.

Findings:

  • High blood and organ concentrations of doxylamine were confirmed in the presented poisoning cases.
  • These findings highlight the potential for severe toxicity even with a readily available medication.

Implications:

  • The study underscores the need for awareness regarding doxylamine's toxicity, especially in overdose scenarios.
  • Further research into doxylamine toxicity and management protocols may be warranted.
