    Retrobulbar neuritis patients showed optic nerve defects. Meridional static perimetry was the most reliable test for detecting these old defects, revealing uniform brightness discrimination loss.

    Background:

    • Retrobulbar neuritis can cause persistent optic nerve damage.
    • Assessing residual visual function after optic neuritis is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate various visual function tests in patients with a history of retrobulbar neuritis.
    • To identify the most reliable method for detecting old optic nerve defects.

    Main Methods:

    • Nine patients with a history of retrobulbar neuritis underwent comprehensive visual testing.
    • Tests included visual acuity, color vision, pupillary reaction, Pulfrich phenomenon, kinetic and static perimetry, afterimage testing, and ophthalmoscopy.
    • Meridional static perimetry (0 to 180 degrees) was specifically analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Meridional 0 to 180 degrees static perimetry proved to be the most consistently reliable test for identifying old optic nerve defects.
    • A uniform decrease in brightness discrimination was observed on either side of the foveal peak in these patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Static perimetry, particularly meridional testing, is highly effective in diagnosing past optic nerve damage from retrobulbar neuritis.
    • Visual field testing can reveal subtle, persistent deficits not always apparent with other standard eye examinations.
