Area of Science:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Environmental Science

Background:

  • Accurate determination of lead (Pb) in water samples is crucial for environmental monitoring and public health.
  • Traditional methods may lack sensitivity or require complex sample preparation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and optimize an on-line column preconcentration method for lead determination in water.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of activated carbon and polyurethane foam as adsorbents for lead preconcentration.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized ammonium O,O-diethyldithiophosphate as a complexing agent.
  • Employed on-line column preconcentration with activated carbon and polyurethane foam adsorbents.
  • Determined lead using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) after elution with ethanol.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Achieved enrichment factors of 63 for activated carbon and 294 for polyurethane foam.
  • Obtained detection limits of 3 µg L⁻¹ and 0.8 µg L⁻¹ for carbon and foam systems, respectively.
  • Demonstrated high recovery efficiencies (>96%) for lead in water samples.

Conclusions:

  • The developed on-line preconcentration method offers a sensitive and efficient approach for lead determination in water.
  • Polyurethane foam provided superior enrichment factors and lower detection limits compared to activated carbon.
  • The method is suitable for routine analysis of lead in environmental water samples.
