Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Atrophic polychondritis (APC) is a rare systemic autoimmune disease affecting cartilage.

Observation:

  • A 46-year-old male with a three-year history of ulcerative colitis presented with nasal swelling.
  • Clinical evaluation and diagnostic examinations confirmed atrophic polychondritis.

Findings:

  • This case represents a rare co-occurrence of ulcerative colitis and atrophic polychondritis.
  • Only twelve previous cases of this specific association have been reported in medical literature.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering autoimmune conditions beyond inflammatory bowel disease in UC patients with unusual symptoms.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Suggests a potential shared autoimmune pathway or trigger in the pathogenesis of both ulcerative colitis and atrophic polychondritis.
  • Emphasizes the need for further research into the relationship between inflammatory bowel disease and chondritis.
