    Summary

Clinical experiments produced skin lesions using two fungi from Vietnam: Trichophyton raubitschekii, causing chronic tinea corporis, and zoophilic Trichophyton mentagrophytes, causing inflammatory ringworm in soldiers.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Mycology
    • Dermatology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Dermatophytes are fungi causing superficial skin infections.
    • Vietnam War exposed soldiers to endemic pathogens.
    • Trichophyton species are common causes of ringworm.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To document clinical manifestations of two dermatophytes in Vietnam.
    • To differentiate the effects of human-adapted vs. zoophilic fungi.

    Main Methods:

    • Clinical observation of induced lesions.
    • Identification of causative dermatophyte species.

    Main Results:

    • Trichophyton raubitschekii caused chronic tinea corporis in Vietnamese individuals.
    • Zoophilic Trichophyton mentagrophytes induced highly inflammatory ringworm in American soldiers.
    • The T. mentagrophytes strain was also studied by Dr. Jones.

    Conclusions:

    • Different dermatophyte species present distinct clinical patterns.
    • Understanding fungal adaptation (zoophilic vs. anthropophilic) is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.
