Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Gallbladder polyps are common, but their association with acute cholecystitis is less understood.
  • This study investigates a rare cause of acute cholecystitis.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with upper abdominal pain and a history of a gallbladder polyp.
  • Imaging revealed gallbladder dilation, wall thickening, and cystic duct stenosis.
  • The previously noted polyp was absent in the resected gallbladder.

Findings:

  • A cholesterol stone impacted the cystic duct, identified as a detached cholesterol polyp.
  • The detached polyp caused obstruction and subsequent acute cholecystitis.

Implications:

  • Spontaneous detachment of gallbladder polyps is a potential cause of acute cholecystitis.
