Summary

Promoting smoke alarms through child health surveillance may increase ownership and function, but injury effects are unknown. Community give-away programs show promise for reducing fire injuries but require more rigorous study.

Systematic search of multiple databases and trial registers.
Included randomized, quasi-randomized, and non-randomized controlled trials post-1969.
Independent data extraction and quality assessment by two reviewers.

Counselling/education had modest effects on alarm ownership and function.
