Summary

A new resorbable suture material was found to contain a skin sensitizer, identified as quinizarin, a decomposed dye. While quinizarin can cause sensitization, its low concentration in the suture suggests minimal risk of contact dermatitis.

Background:

  • A novel resorbable poly(L-lactide-co-epsilon-caprolactone) (P(LA/CL)) monofilament suture was developed.
  • A previous study indicated the presence of a skin sensitizer in P(LA/CL) sutures.

  • To assess the risk of contact dermatitis associated with the use of P(LA/CL) sutures.

    • The concentration of quinizarin in the sutures is significantly lower than its minimum sensitizing concentration.
    • P(LA/CL) sutures pose a low risk for inducing contact dermatitis.
