Background:

College student drinking poses significant social and emotional challenges.
Existing measures of alcohol-related problems may lack reliability or brevity for widespread campus use.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a short, reliable, two-factor instrument for measuring negative consequences of drinking in college students.
To refine the College Alcohol Problems Scale (CAPS) into a more effective measure, the CAPS-r.

Main Methods:

Utilized principal components analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on data from two large samples of college students.
Developed and refined an eight-item, two-factor scale (CAPS-r) measuring social and emotional problems related to alcohol use.

Main Results:

The revised CAPS (CAPS-r) demonstrated a robust two-factor structure (social and emotional problems).
Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the model fit and factor invariance across gender.
The CAPS-r proved to be internally consistent and externally valid.

Conclusions:

The CAPS-r is a short, reliable, and valid measure for assessing alcohol-related problems in college populations.
This scale facilitates cost-effective data collection, program evaluation, and epidemiological surveillance on college campuses.
