Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Immunization Programs

Background:

  • India's polio eradication strategy relied on National Immunization Days (NIP).
  • Coverage data for 1999-2000 required validation.
  • UNICEF conducted a Coverage Evaluation Survey (CES) at the Government of India's (GOI) request.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate reported polio immunization coverage data for 1999-2000 in India.
  • To identify reasons for non-compliance and unreached children.

Main Methods:

  • Modified cluster sampling was employed.
  • Data was collected from 15 states as of August 31, 2000.
  • Qualitative research explored barriers to compliance.

Main Results:

  • Ten out of 15 states achieved over 95% coverage for at least three polio doses.
  • Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Gujarat reported 99% coverage.
  • Despite high overall coverage, significant numbers of children remained unreached, particularly in urban areas of Uttar Pradesh (UP).

Conclusions:

  • While NIP strategy showed success, challenges remain in reaching all children.
  • Barriers include lack of awareness, parental attitudes, side effect apprehension, and traditional beliefs.
  • Service provider factors like inadequate training and compensation also contribute to non-compliance.
