Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Impacted upper ureteral stones pose a clinical challenge.
  • Traditional surgical interventions can involve significant morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of retroperitoneoscopic ureterolithotomy for impacted upper ureteral stones.

Main Methods:

  • Retroperitoneoscopic ureterolithotomy performed using Gaur's procedure with balloon dissection and four ports.
  • Impacted stones removed via ureteral incision with a hook electrode.
  • Ureteral stenting and retroperitoneal drain placement without ureteral suturing.

Main Results:

  • Successful stone removal in two patients with impacted upper ureteral stones.

  • Complications included wound infection (MRSA) in one patient and psoas abscess in another.
  • Conclusions:

    • Retroperitoneoscopic ureterolithotomy is a viable alternative for impacted upper ureteral stones.
    • The procedure is associated with minimal postoperative pain.
    • Careful patient selection and monitoring are necessary due to potential complications.
