A thoracolumbar extradural arachnoid cyst caused progressive leg weakness in a patient. Surgical removal of the cyst successfully resolved the neurological symptoms, demonstrating effective treatment.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Neurology
- Radiology
Background:
- Spinal arachnoid cysts are rare, benign lesions that can cause neurological deficits.
- Extradural arachnoid cysts in the thoracolumbar region are particularly uncommon.
Observation:
- A 48-year-old male experienced progressive leg weakness.
- Imaging studies revealed an extradural arachnoid cyst from T-12 to L-2.
Findings:
- Surgical exploration confirmed the presence of the extradural arachnoid cyst.
- Complete cyst excision was achieved during the surgical procedure.
Implications:
- Surgical removal of thoracolumbar extradural arachnoid cysts can lead to significant neurological recovery.
- This case highlights the importance of considering spinal arachnoid cysts in the differential diagnosis of progressive leg weakness.
