Academic performance in nursing theory courses predicts success on the National Certification Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Identifying at-risk students early can improve pass rates for the Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) NCLEX-RN.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Professional Licensure Examinations
  • Educational Assessment

Background:

  • The Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) format of the National Certification Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) is widely used.
  • No prior studies have investigated predictors of success on the CAT NCLEX-RN among baccalaureate nursing graduates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify significant predictors of successful performance on the CAT NCLEX-RN.
  • To develop a discriminant function for classifying graduates' success or failure on the examination.

Main Methods:

  • A discriminant analysis was employed.
  • The study included 289 baccalaureate nursing graduates from 1995-1998.
  • Twenty-one variables were analyzed to identify predictors.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Seven significant predictor variables were identified.
  • The strongest predictor of success was the total number of C+ or lower grades in nursing theory courses.
  • Grades in specific nursing courses also emerged as significant predictors.
  • The discriminant function correctly classified over 93% of graduates.
  • NCLEX-RN pass and fail rates were correctly classified at 94% and 92%, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Academic performance, particularly in nursing theory courses, is a strong predictor of NCLEX-RN success.
  • The developed discriminant function demonstrates high accuracy in classifying potential NCLEX-RN failures.
  • This tool can aid in identifying students at risk of failing the licensure examination, allowing for timely interventions.
