Abstract:
In the treatment of fractures of the clavicle the generally accepted principles of fracture treatment should be observed, viz: X-rays in two projections at least, anatomical reduction and fixation stable enough to withstand exercising. Treatment with just a sling is adequate in children up to 14 years of age and also in older patients with only slight displacement. Surgical reduction and fixation with a Kirschner wire is to be preferred in patients older than 14 years with shortening by more than 1 cm or with severe displacement in another direction, and in cases of comminuted fractures. Patients with such fractures in whom operation is contra-indicated should be treated with an abduction-tractionbandage. The dorsal pad should be abandoned.
