Immunotherapy historical perspective
1RA Cooke Institute of Allergy, Department of Medicine, St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, New York, NY, USA. lfinegold@aol.com
Objective:
To review early history of specific immunotherapy, particularly the contribution of Robert A. Cooke.
Data Sources:
Review of literature.
Conclusions:
Cooke was an important investigator developing the basic method of immunotherapy as it is practiced today. His contributions to the field of allergy are staggering. They include the elucidation of blocking antibodies, passive transfers, dosage techniques, testing techniques, and more. It is our hope this consensus conference will lead to more national and international collaborative efforts focusing on different subtopics of allergen immunotherapy. We intend to bring cutting edge information, discussions, and consensus agreements for our own members, for other physicians, and for the public at large.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
