    Summary

Peristomal carcinoma risk is linked to subglottic tumor extent and preliminary tracheostomy. Early detection and extensive resection offer the best prognosis, while prophylactic measures may reduce incidence.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Peristomal carcinoma is a rare but serious complication.
    • Subglottic involvement and prior tracheostomy are identified as key risk factors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify causative factors of peristomal carcinoma.
    • To evaluate treatment outcomes and propose prophylactic strategies.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of case histories.
    • Analysis of tumor foci location.
    • Evaluation of treatment modalities (radiation, chemotherapy, resection).

    Main Results:

    • Tumor foci were observed in tracheostomy tracts and pretracheal lymphatics.
    • Prognosis is grave once established.
    • Extensive resection offers the best chance for cure.

    Conclusions:

    • Avoiding preliminary tracheostomy and meticulous surgical technique are crucial for prevention.
    • Early diagnosis and aggressive surgical management are vital for improving outcomes.
