Hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA levels often rebound after interferon (IFN) treatment. Two-step interferon rebound therapy (TIRT) may improve outcomes for non-responsive patients.

Background:

  • Interferon (IFN) therapy is a standard treatment for Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
  • Many patients do not achieve sustained virologic response (SVR) with standard IFN treatment.

Observation:

  • HCV RNA levels often rebound after interferon treatment cessation.
  • Rebound in HCV RNA can lead to transient transaminase elevation.
  • HCV RNA levels decrease after transient exacerbation.

Findings:

  • Two-step interferon rebound therapy (TIRT) involves additional IFN administration during HCV RNA decrease.
  • TIRT has shown promise in treating type 1b HCV patients with high viral loads unresponsive to initial IFN.
