Summary

The ice test effectively differentiates myasthenia gravis (MG) ptosis from other causes. This simple, safe, and inexpensive test shows high accuracy in diagnosing MG ocular ptosis.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the ice test in distinguishing myasthenia gravis (MG) ptosis from non-MG ptosis.

  • A prospective, non-randomized comparative study involved 40 patients (20 with MG ptosis, 20 with non-MG ptosis).
  • The ice test involved applying ice to the eyelids for 2 minutes, measuring palpebral fissure width before and after.
  • A positive test was defined as a ≥2 mm widening of the palpebral fissure.

  • 19 out of 20 MG patients (95%) had a positive ice test.
