Summary

Gastrointestinal bleeding is uncommon in rugby players, suggesting abdominal trauma is less significant than in long-distance runners. Hemorrhoids were not identified as a cause of bleeding in this rugby cohort.

  • To investigate occult GI bleeding in rugby players.
  • To compare GI bleeding incidence in rugby versus long-distance runners.

  • Stool occult blood tests were performed on Croatian national rugby players.
  • One player with a positive test was monitored for 18 months.

  • One player showed a conversion from negative to positive occult blood test post-match.
  • This player had low hemoglobin and iron levels, and hemorrhoids, but no active bleeding.
