Summary

Simulated weightlessness via head down tilt (HDT) reduced lung function like forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in healthy males. However, pulmonary diffusion capacity significantly increased.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of short-term simulated weightlessness on lung function in healthy young males.
  • To investigate changes in pulmonary ventilation and diffusion.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve healthy males (18-21 years) underwent a -30 degrees head down tilt (HDT) for 45 minutes to simulate weightlessness.
  • Lung function was measured using plethysmography in seated, supine, and HDT positions.
  • Pulmonary artery blood flow and right ventricle function were assessed via Doppler echocardiography.
