Summary

F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans sometimes show high uptake in tonsils. This study found this uptake is common and likely reflects normal physiological inflammation, not head and neck disease.

Background:

  • F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is used in head and neck imaging.
  • Symmetric tonsillar FDG uptake is an occasional finding in these studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and degree of tonsillar FDG uptake.
  • To investigate the significance of observed tonsillar FDG uptake.

Main Methods:

  • FDG-PET scans of the head and neck were performed on 17 patients without head and neck disease.
  • Incidence and Standardized Uptake Values (SUVs) of tonsillar FDG uptake were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Remarkable tonsillar FDG uptake (mean SUV 4.29) was observed in 9 out of 17 patients.
  • Non-remarkable uptake (mean SUV 2.46) was seen in the remaining 8 patients.
