Achieving strong proximal contacts in Class II resin composite restorations is crucial. A sectional matrix system, like Palodent, significantly improved contact quality compared to other matrix systems and packable composites.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of different resin composite types (packable vs. conventional) and matrix systems on the quality of proximal contact areas in Class II composite restorations.
  • To compare the effectiveness of various matrix systems and a specialized hand instrument in achieving superior proximal contacts.

Main Methods:

  • Standardized Class II (DO) cavities were prepared in 170 artificial teeth.
  • Four resin composites and three matrix systems were tested, with and without a specialized contact former instrument.

    Conclusions:

    • Sectional matrix systems are superior for achieving optimal proximal contact areas in Class II composite restorations.
    • The 'packability' of resin composites did not demonstrate a significant advantage in improving proximal contact quality.
