Summary

Obsessive-compulsive disorder may stem from an overactive mental module that generates risk scenarios. This evolutionary psychology hypothesis suggests obsessions are an "off-line" process for future risk avoidance.

Area of Science:

  • Evolutionary Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health condition.
  • Existing theories often focus on anxiety and immediate threat responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a novel evolutionary psychology hypothesis for the origins of OCD.
  • To differentiate the proposed mechanism from anxiety-related phenomena.

Main Methods:

  • Theoretical framework development within evolutionary psychology.
  • Hypothesizing the function of a specific mental module.

Main Results:

  • Obsessions and compulsions may arise from an overactive mental module.
  • This module generates risk scenarios for "off-line" future risk avoidance.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed hypothesis offers a testable framework for OCD research.
  • This evolutionary perspective may elucidate the origins of obsessional phenomena.
