Area of Science:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Gastroenterology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disease of unknown cause.
  • Pancreatic involvement in sarcoidosis is rare, typically due to granulomatous infiltration.
  • Hypercalcemic pancreatitis is a recognized complication of hypercalcemia from various causes.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with symptoms suggestive of pancreatitis.
  • Diagnostic workup revealed hypercalcemia as a contributing factor.
  • The underlying etiology for the hypercalcemia and pancreatitis was investigated.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with sarcoidosis.
  • The sarcoidosis was identified as the cause of hypercalcemia.
  • The hypercalcemia, in turn, led to an unusual presentation of pancreatitis.

Implications:

  • This case highlights an unusual manifestation of sarcoidosis.
  • It underscores the importance of considering sarcoidosis in unexplained hypercalcemia and pancreatitis.
  • Early diagnosis and management of sarcoidosis are crucial for preventing complications.
